Why Smoke Damage Is Harder Than It Looks

Soot and Odor Are Two Separate Problems

Soot is a physical residue on surfaces; odor is a chemical compound absorbed deep into drywall, insulation, wood, and ductwork, both require separate, sequential treatments to achieve a complete result.

Soot Type Must Be Classified First

The IICRC S700 standard requires classifying residue type before any cleaning begins, because the wrong first action causes permanent damage to walls, ceilings, and porous stone.

HEPA Vacuuming Before Any Wet Cleaning

Dry/powdery soot must be HEPA-vacuumed before wet contact. Wiping first smears particles into drywall and permanently stains the surface, a mistake that cannot be undone.

Deodorization Goes Beyond Surface Wiping

Thermal fogging penetrates structural crevices, ozone oxidizes odor molecules, and hydroxyl generators work safely with occupants present, each method targets the compounds, not the symptom.

HVAC Carries Odor to Every Room

Smoke absorbed into ductwork recirculates through the entire home every time the system runs; HVAC cleaning and deodorization is not optional, it is the final step that makes the result permanent.

Know What You’re Dealing With

The Three Types of Smoke Residue

Soot type drives the entire cleaning approach. Our technicians classify residue on scene before selecting any product or tool.

Paper · Wood · Cardboard

Dry / Powdery Soot

Must be HEPA-vacuumed before any wet cleaning. If wiped first, the dry particles smear into the surface and permanently stain drywall, painted walls, and porous stone. Only after vacuuming is wet cleaning applied.

Furniture · Rubber · Plastics

Wet / Oily Soot

Leaves a thick, smeary residue. Chemical treatment precedes wiping. Attempting to wipe first spreads the oily film and drives it deeper. Some wet-soot-affected drywall cannot be cleaned and must be removed and replaced.

Kitchen · Grease · Meat

Protein Soot

Nearly invisible but intensely pungent, bonding aggressively to every surface. Requires enzyme or alkaline chemical solvents. Retail cleaning products do not dissolve protein soot, they spread it.

Signs You Need Professional Help

Signs You Need Professional Smoke Damage Restoration

If any of these describe your home, professional treatment is the right call, the wrong cleaning method on the wrong soot type causes permanent damage that makes professional restoration impossible.

Persistent Smell Despite Surface Cleaning

If the odor remains after you’ve wiped visible soot, the compounds are embedded in porous materials, drywall, insulation, wood framing, that surface cleaning cannot reach.

Soot Visible on HVAC Grilles

Residue on registers or return-air grilles confirms the air handling system is contaminated and will recirculate odor throughout the home every time it runs.

Smell Intensifies When HVAC Runs

This is the clearest indicator of duct contamination; deodorizing surfaces alone will not resolve it, the ductwork and air handler must be cleaned and treated.

Smell Returns Days After DIY Cleaning

Odor compounds re-volatilize from porous materials as temperatures change; if the smell comes back, the source was never eliminated, only temporarily suppressed.

Questions & Answers

Smoke Damage Restoration FAQs

Is smoke damage covered by homeowners insurance?
In most cases, yes. Smoke damage from a fire, including small kitchen fires, furnace puff-backs, and nearby structure fires, is typically covered under HO-2 and HO-3 homeowners policies as a named fire peril. RescueHero bills your carrier directly, and you have the right to choose your own restoration contractor rather than the insurer’s preferred vendor. See our homeowners insurance guide.
How do you get smoke smell out of a house?
Actual odor elimination requires treating the odor compounds absorbed into porous materials, not just wiping surfaces. RescueHero uses thermal fogging (a solvent-based fog that penetrates structural crevices and porous surfaces), ozone treatment (oxidizes odor molecules; all occupants, plants, and pets must vacate during treatment), or hydroxyl generators (safe with occupants and pets present). HVAC ductwork must be separately cleaned and deodorized, or the smell recirculates every time the system runs. Air fresheners and candles mask odor temporarily, they do not remove the compounds causing it.
Can I clean smoke and soot myself?
You can remove loose surface soot in some cases, but the risk is permanent damage. Dry/powdery soot must be HEPA-vacuumed before any wet cleaning. Wiping first smears it into drywall and permanently stains the surface. Protein soot (kitchen fires) and wet/oily soot (smoldering fires) require specific chemical treatments not available in retail products. Incorrect first contact with the wrong cleaning product can make professional restoration impossible. If the damage is more than a light dusting on hard surfaces, call us to assess before attempting any cleaning.
How long does smoke odor removal take?
Smoke odor removal typically takes 3 to 10 days for a contained event (kitchen fire, puff-back) and up to 1 to 2 weeks for larger smoke intrusion events. HVAC cleaning and deodorization adds 1 to 2 days to the timeline and is often the rate-limiting step. Thermal fogging and ozone treatment require the structure to be vacated and sealed for several hours each cycle. If mold remediation is also required from fire suppression water, that work runs concurrently and may extend the overall timeline.
